The benefits of singing on humans have been demonstrated many times, to the point that it is an art used as “therapy with artistic mediation” to soothe anxieties. A mother herself knows how to instinctively reassure her infant by whispering lullabies, with or without words. This phenomenon is observed in all cultures, regardless of level of education.
Singing allows you to take time to concentrate on yourself, on your body and your sensations. After a singing session, you feel relaxed, as you might after a sports session. The voice projects, reverberates in the acoustics of a place, against the walls, in the ears of others, even mixing with other voices in ensemble practice. This provides a feeling of calming. In this direction chanting can be considered a type of meditation. The fact of immersing yourself in a musical universe and putting yourself in resonance creates a parenthesis, a comfortable bubble.
The positions brought about by holding certain musical instruments can cause tension (in the hands, arms, neck) if we do not work on specific relaxation. With singing, there is no need to adopt an asymmetrical posture, no tension in the wrists... You can sing with your arms relaxed along your body, as in all the most incredible or sporty positions!
Singing leads to an increase in oxygen consumption, breathing becomes deeper, the lungs and the whole body are better oxygenated. The result is an immediate feeling of better being. Having regular practice, singing phrases that are often longer than spoken phrases, gradually develops and opens the rib cage. The capacity of the lungs can even be increased by force. So it’s also good for your health!
For many, you will come out of a singing session in a better mood, sometimes even more cheerful, even euphoric! (Observe children coming out of a singing session). Added to this is the satisfaction of having spent a friendly moment sharing with other musicians, or even of having performed in front of an audience to whom we were able to transmit emotions, energy, messages.
Singing gets work done accompanied by muscle exercise. The muscles of the entire body are used: diaphragm, abdominals, lower back muscles to name a few. With the pronunciation of words, the work on the expressiveness of the gaze, important in the interpretation, we use a number of facial muscles, the cheekbones, the muscles of the lips, (which can even beautify their curve!). Blood circulation and micro-circulation are well activated.
The results of these sessions will be beneficial, even when you only use your speaking voice. Better control acquired in breath management, optimization of the power of your voice, adequate work of the vocal cords, also allow you to tire much less when speaking. This is a real asset in any presentation or class situation you might give.
